to play like them just strum up and down the whole song with the thumb and the index (radical face style) the upper 4 strings

Replace the G* with a regular barred Bm and it's golden. If you're playing solo, I think this is better with some finger picking rather than trying to mimic the strumming pattern they use with the band (just imho).
